Should you buy a .co.ke or a .com?

Which domain extension to buy for a Kenyan business, what each one signals, and why you should probably own both.

Short answer: buy the .co.ke if you sell to Kenya, buy the .com as well if it is available and affordable, and point one at the other. The longer answer is about what each one signals and what it costs you to get this wrong.

What .co.ke does for you

  • It says you are here. For a business selling locally — a garage, a fabricator, a clinic — that is a trust signal, not a limitation.
  • It is usually available. The .com for your business name was probably taken in 2004 by someone in another country. The .co.ke very likely was not.
  • It is cheap. Roughly KES 1,000 to 1,500 a year through a KeNIC-accredited registrar.
  • It carries a mild local search advantage for Kenyan queries. Mild. Do not buy a domain expecting it to do your ranking for you.

When .com is worth the trouble

If you sell outside Kenya, or you expect to, a .com removes a question from the buyer's mind. It also survives your ambitions better — a .co.ke on a company that later opens in Kampala reads as a company that did not plan for it.

What you should not do is split them. Running your website on one and your email on the other, or letting both resolve separately, divides whatever search authority you build and confuses people who half-remember your address. Own both, serve one, redirect the other.

The parts people get wrong

  • Registering it in the developer's name. Buy it yourself, on your own email, with your own card. Everything else can be delegated. This cannot.
  • Letting it lapse. Set the renewal to auto, and make sure the card on file is one that will still be valid next year. Domains that expire get bought within hours by people who then sell them back to you.
  • Buying a name you cannot say down a phone. If you have to spell it every time, it is the wrong name — this is a bigger cost than the extension.
  • Assuming the registrar set it up. A registered domain and a working domain are different things: the DNS zone still has to exist and point somewhere.

A reasonable default

  1. 01Check availability for both the .co.ke and the .com.
  2. 02Register the .co.ke through a KeNIC-accredited registrar, in your own name.
  3. 03Register the .com too if it is free and the price is ordinary.
  4. 04Serve the site on one of them and 301-redirect the other to it.
  5. 05Use the same domain for your email. A business on a Gmail address is leaving money on the table.
